The Department of Music at Indiana University of Pennsylvania presents the 14th annual IUP Jazz Festival. The festival will be held in Fisher Auditorium in the Performing Arts Center on the IUP campus on Saturday, May 3, beginning at 7:30 p.m. and will feature the IUP Jazz Band and the IUP Jazz Ensemble. The featured guest conductor for the concert is Ebensburg native Alan Baylock. The IUP Jazz Band is led by Keith Young, professor of Saxophone. The IUP Jazz Ensemble is directed by Kevin Eisensmith, professor of Trumpet.
Also featured in this concert will be the IUP High School Honors Jazz Band, directed by Eisensmith and Young. Twenty students from five different high schools, including Brentwood, Forest Hills, Saltsburg, Indiana Area, and Southmoreland, will perform works for jazz band. These students were recommended for participation in the IUP Jazz Festival by their band directors and will rehearse throughout the day on Saturday prior to their Saturday evening performance.
High school and college music students alike will participate in a clinic presented by Baylock on Saturday afternoon.
Alan Baylock is quickly becoming recognized as one of the most creative voices in the music business today. He is in demand as a composer, arranger, conductor, producer, instrumentalist, educator, and is the leader of the Alan Baylock Jazz Orchestra. In addition, he is Jazz Composer-in-Residence at Shenandoah University, and he is the chief arranger for the renowned Airmen of Note jazz ensemble in Washington, D.C.
Baylock’s music has been performed and/or recorded by jazz greats Freddie Hubbard, Michael Brecker, Maynard Ferguson, Doc Severinsen, Joe Lovano, Paquito D’Rivera, Phil Woods, Arturo Sandoval, David Liebman, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Kenny Werner, Joshua Redman, Nicholas Payton, Nnenna Freelon, Tierney Sutton, Kurt Elling, and many more. His eclectic talents have also led him to writing music for Roy Clark, Lee Greenwood, Wynonna, Al Jarreau, Chaka Khan, Patti LaBelle, Spyro Gyra, Ronan Tynan, and symphony orchestras here and abroad. An inspiring educator, Baylock is regularly featured as guest artist, clinician, and adjudicator at jazz festivals, universities, and high schools across the country. Much of his music is published by Alfred Music.
While with the “Note,” he toured extensively across the North and South. Baylock’s mastery of the art of jazz arranging and composition expresses itself in his incomparable technique, staggering virtuosity, and an unquenchable desire to challenge and surprise. Along with explosive energy, ingenious re-harmonizations, and imaginative melodic, tonal, and rhythmic expressions, Baylock’s creations beam with a sense of joy and soulfulness and are a glimpse into the depth of the human spirit.
Baylock’s appearance at the IUP Jazz Festival has been made possible in part through a grant from Volkweins Music, with additional, generous support from the IUP College of Fine Arts and the IUP Department of Music.
Cost of tickets for the evening concert are: $9.00 regular admission, $8.00 for senior citizens and students, and $6.00 with an I-Card.
