Students in the IUP Writing CenterThe Oasis Center at IUP Punxsutawney begins its second year of hosting academic support for enrolled first-year students. The Oasis is home to the Writing Center, under the direction of English Department Associate Professor Lynn Shelly since 2007, and campus tutorial services, coordinated by Librarian Portia Diaz. Shelly is assisted this year by English graduate assistant Kathleen Hynes.

As part of its outreach efforts, the Writing Center sponsors a variety of events and activities that foster engagement beyond the classroom. They include the Poets Society, semester poetry slams, and writing for the Punxsutawney Spirit daily newspaper. Increasingly, Punxsutawney faculty incorporate Writing Center mentorship into their syllabi. 2012–2013 Writing Center student participation exceeded 50 percent.

The Oasis also is available throughout the day and evening for small group study.
