An IUP technology support and training student took first place at the second Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education Student Business Plan Competition on April 15, 2013.
Krutarth Patel of Harrisburg will receive $10,000 to assist in the startup of his business plan, Dorm Discount (.com). Patel’s plan was designed to help small businesses effectively market their promotions to college students.
The service would provide a unique self-service coupon creator and management system that business owners would use to generate, monitor, and modify promotions easily and conveniently. Its goal would be to maximize savings to college students while boosting revenues for small business owners.
“Dorm Discount (.com) is now well positioned to expand and continue to help college students and the small businesses that serve them connect like never before,” Patel said.
More than 200 students competed in this year’s competition, designed to provide student entrepreneurs a real-world opportunity to pitch their original business plans. Three of the 21 semifinalists were IUP students.
“We are sincerely thankful for all of the support we have received from faculty members at Eberly and the Small Business Development Center for going above and beyond to help us along the way,” Patel said. “Without their support, our business may not be where it is today.”
