As part of the new Ovations! performing arts series at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, the Lively Arts will present the award-winning clarinetist José Franch-Ballester in a recital on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.
The concert, which includes Roman Rabinovich as accompanist and guest artist David Martynuik, will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Gorell Recital Hall, located on the second floor of Sutton Hall.
Franch-Ballester, a native of Spain, began his musical studies at the age of nine. He is a graduate of the Joaquin Rodrigo Music Conservatory in Valencia in 2000 and the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia, where he graduated in 2005.
His awards include first prize in the Cultural Council of Valencia for three consecutive years, the 2004 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, the 2004 Astral Artists National Auditon in Philadelphia, the Alexander Kasza-Kasser Concert Prize, and the Claire Tow Prize.
Franch-Ballaster continues to perform throughout Europe, Asia, and North America and regularly performs with the Astral Winds. He has been a part of several new commissions by composers such as Jake Heggie and continues to hold educational workshops and performances for aspiring musicians.
According to the New York Times, “He is a natural onstage... played with technical wizardry and tireless enthusiasm.” The American Symphony League Magazine stated “One of the year’s most prominent emerging soloists.”
From Israel, Rabinovich is also a multi-award-winning musician, including four additional prizes, at the twelfth Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. He has also taken first first prizes at the Animato and the Arjil Piano Competitions in Paris as well as the Vendome Virtuosi prize.
The pair will perform works by Claude Debussy, Camille Saint-Saens, Francis Poulenc, and contemporary composer John Novacek.
Joining for a work by Felix Mendelssohn will be David Martynuik, clarinet. Martynuik is an assistant professor of Music and director of the IUP Marching Band.
