John Kopchick ’72,
M’75and Char Labay Kopchick ’73 announced in April that they were committing $23 million in support of the
Imagine Unlimited Campaign. Their gift enabled the university to announce its
$75-million campaign in support of academic and athletics programs,
scholarships, and facilities, including a new science building. It is the
largest gift in university history. Their historic announcement is not where
their philanthropic journey began, however. Before that, they had given a
multimillion-dollar gift to the University of Texas Graduate School of
Biomedical Sciences at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The gift included funding for
internships at the cancer center for IUP undergraduate students.

major Denali Davis applied to other
schools, but she chose IUP because she discovered she’d have access to hands-on
research opportunities as early as her freshman year. An aspiring physician-scientist,
she was chosen to be the first Kopchick intern at MD Anderson—an experience
that transformed her goals.
