Athletes, but Students First

  • Hannah Mercer

Heavily recruited, and with softball friends going to larger Division I schools, Hannah Mercer knew where the future waited for her—IUP.

“I came here for a football game while in high school and knew that no other place sparked me like this campus,” she recalled. “IUP recruited me and stayed after me for a long time, but it was always my first choice, anyway.”

Pursuing a dual major in marketing and economics (honors track), Hannah, No. 25 in the picture, has her sights on a career in wealth management and investments. A scholarship opened the door to the education she wants. The approach and philosophy prevalent throughout IUP athletics keep her priorities straight, she said.

“Coach calls us in if we get a C or lower in a class. We’re students first,” Hannah explained. “The camaraderie on our team is wonderful. It’s your family while you’re away from your family. When I talk with recruits, I say there’s no other college that has the balance of sports, academics, and community service IUP does. More scholarships for more kids go a long way.”
