Aspiring Producer Plans to Shed Light on Good

  • Maya Cryor, 2014

Maya Cryor. Remember that name. Someday, you’ll be able to say you first learned about her when she was a senior at IUP.

An aspiring on-camera journalist, Maya wants to make productions that inspire and that highlight people and actions that are positive.

“I want to bring awareness to issues and make positive change,” said the Communications Media major from Exeter, Pa., who earned the African American Alumni Scholarship. “Doing video production or becoming an on-air personality appeals to me because I am able to use different forms of media to spread a positive message. People use media to bash or present negative images, but I want to change the way people think about the media.”

She is experimenting with that concept now, during her final semester in a practicum experience, working closely with a professor to create productions about people that she hopes will be aired on IUP-TV. “Some people seem ordinary, but everyone has an extraordinary element,” she said.

Thankful for the opportunity she has had here at IUP and for the scholarship she received, Maya said, “College students, especially, need help with finances. Giving back—it’s something I’ll do, too.”
