Dr. Calvin O. Masilela

Dr. Calvin O. Masilela is a professor in the Geography and Regional Planning Department andhas been with IUP since 1990. During a brief hiatus from IUP from 1993-2001, he was an associate professor in the Department of Geology and Geography and director of the McNair Scholars Program at West Virginia University. Upon his return to IUP in 2001, Dr. Masilela assumed responsibility for the very successful Upward Bound Math and Science Program and continues to serve as the director. In 2003, he received IUP's first TRIO grant for the Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program and has served as the director of this program since its inception. Dr. Masilela has published more than twenty journal articles, book reviews, and technical reports related to land reform, settlement planning, land use planning, and urbanization and development issues. He has givenmore than fiftypresentations in a variety of professional and academic venues.

Dr. Masilela's commitment and success extends far beyond the classroom. This is evident in his continued support and participation in sponsored research activity. Dr. Masilela has more than $3 million in sponsored awards to his credit and continues to investigate and pursue additional monies to complement and enhance his activities. Research areas included in his portfolio are Ronald E. McNair Post-Baccalaureate Achievement Program, Upward Bound Mathand Science Program, IUP African American Male Student Learning Community,"Information Technology for Higher Education Capacity Building in Southern Africa,"and "Monitoring Beira (Mozambique) Using Geographic Urban Indicators."

Additional areas of interest are African development, urban development and management, urban planning, rural development and land reform, urbanization and HIV/AIDS. Dr. Masilela received IUP's College ofHumanities and Social Sciences 2007 Reach Beyond Award and was honored by the School of Graduate Studies and Research and the IUP Research Institute in 2007 as the Outstanding Researcher.
