Semesters at the Community Music School

The IUP Community Music School, located in Cogswell Hall, provides noncredit private lessons, ensembles, and classes in music year-round to students of all ages in the Indiana community.

Fall 2021 COVID-19 Update

Current fall offerings include:

  • In-person and virtual private lessons
  • Indiana Concert Band (if minimums are met)
  • Crimson Youth Choir (if minimums are met)
  • Guitar and Piano classes (if minimums are met)

Not being offered this fall are:

  • Music Together Early Childhood classes
  • Indiana Community Choir
  • Percussion Ensemble

Tentative for the fall:

  • Laurel Highlanders Pipes & Drums

The following applies during the fall 2021 semester, following the university guidelines for returning to campus and the Music Department Guidelines.

Please understand that these guidelines can change at any time in response to new information from the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health. If there are changes, you will be notified by your ensemble director and/or private lesson instructor and the website will also be updated.

  • NEW as of 8:00 a.m. on August 17, 2021:  IUP will require face coverings/masks to be worn indoors in public spaces at all campuses and centers. This is required of all people, regardless of their COVID19 vaccination status.
  • Masking is not required outdoors.
  • Social distancing is not required.
  • No proof of vaccination will be required of students, employees, or visitors.
  • During a rehearsal, it is recommended that brass players use a puppy pee pad when emptying their instrument of condensation (available very inexpensively at Ollie’s).

Parking Information

Between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday, all posted parking requirements for the campus lots and parking garage are strictly enforced. New this semester: All spaces marked PAY have been configured for license plate payment, not by space number. Head-in parking is required in all PAY spaces.

After 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and all day on weekends, all campus lots and the parking garage—including the reserved spaces in the garage—are free.

Upcoming Semesters

Fall 2021

The fall 2021 semester officially begins on Monday, August 30, one week after the start of the IUP spring semester, and continues through Sunday, December 12.

Registration opens on Monday, August 2. Fall offerings will continue to include both virtual and in-person private lessons on all instruments with various levels of instructors, as well as the Indiana Concert Band.  Be sure to check all ensemble and class pages for their respective status for the semester.

Spring 2022

The spring 2022 semester officially begins on Monday, January 24, one week after the start of the IUP spring semester, and continues through Sunday, May 8.

Registration opens on Monday, November 29. Spring offerings will continue to include both virtual and in-person private lessons on all instruments with various levels of instructors.

Summer 2022

The summer 2022 session officially begins on Tuesday, May 31.

Registration opens on Monday, May 2. Summer offerings will continue to include both virtual and in-person private lessons on all instruments (depending upon available instructors).

Registration Fee

The IUP Community Music School assesses a $25 registration fee per individual student, per semester for fall and spring, and a reduced $20 fee for the summer. This fee supports a very small portion of the total administrative costs associated with running the school.
