Established in 1975, the Laurel Highlanders Pipes and Drums have a rich history. The IUP Community Music School is proud to offer a class in this unique and historic instrument!

Fall 2021 COVID-19 Update

The Laurel Highlanders Pipes and Drums class WILL be offered for the fall 2021 semester!  Although the COVID-19 situation is ever-changing, current guidelines will allow for the class to meet.

The following applies during the fall 2021 semester, following the university guidelines for returning to campus and the Music Department Guidelines.

Please understand that these guidelines can change at any time in response to new information from the CDC and Pennsylvania Department of Health. If there are changes, you will be notified by your the director and the website will also be updated.

  • NEW as of 8:00 a.m. on August 17, 2021:  IUP will require face coverings/masks to be worn indoors in public spaces at all campuses and centers. This is required of all people, regardless of their COVID-19 vaccination status.
  • Masking is not required outdoors.
  • Social distancing is not required.
  • No proof of vaccination will be required of students, employees or visitors.
  • During a rehearsal, it is recommended that brass players use a puppy pee pad when emptying their instrument of condensation (available very inexpensively at Ollie’s).

In this introductory course, students will learn to play a practice chanter, striving for excellence in rudimentary fingering, tone production, and performance of songs. With serious practice, students should be able to perform with a Scottish pipe band in six months to one year.

The Highland Bagpipe Tutor Book 1 (formerly The College of Piping Volume 1, aka "the Green book"). Available on the Piper's Hut website. This is the book, practice chanter, and two reeds. Purchase of the metronome is optional; there are many free metronome apps for your phone that will work just fine.
