Brass Sophomore Competency Requirements

  • IUP Brass Area Sophomore Competency Requirements

    1. All B.F.A., B.S.Ed. and B.A. brass students will perform a Sophomore Competency exam at the end of the fourth semester of applied lessons.
    2. Sophomore Competencies will be administered by the full brass faculty during finals week.
    3. Students will perform all major and minor scales by memory. 
    4. Minor scales include natural, melodic and harmonic forms performed sequentially within each key.
    5. All major scales will be performed two octaves except for range limitations based on the individual instruments (as approved by instructor). All minor scales will be performed in one octave.
    6. Scales should be tongued.
    7. All scales should be performed in quarters and eighths between quarter = 116-132.
    8. Sophomore Competencies must be completed within 10 minutes. Any scales not completed in the allotted time will be counted as missed.
    9. Any scale performed with inaccurate positions or valve combinations or with inconsistent rhythm will be counted as incorrect. No partial credit will be awarded.
    10. Sophomore Competencies will be scored on a pass/fail basis. A passing score will be considered 85 percent.
    11. Students who do not pass the Sophomore Competency will be given an “I” for the fourth semester of applied lessons. Students who do not pass the Sophomore Competency must retake the exam prior to the end of the drop/add period of the subsequent semester. If a student is successful in the retake exam he/she will be given a “C” for the fourth semester of applied lessons. Students who are unsuccessful in the retake exam will be given an “F” for the fourth semester of applied lessons and must repeat semester four of applied lessons.
