Editing a Page Layout

  • Content (text, links, and images) and/or collections must be created before they can be added to a page layout. Content blocks are created in the content folders, not the page layout folders.

(If you want to make a brand new page, go to Creating a Page Layout.)

    Edit in the Web browser

Always do your web editing in Firefox or Chrome only.

Log in to the staging CMS, then go to the web page you want to edit.

    • Either type the web address (URL) into the browser’s web address field (make sure the beginning of the URL starts with staging.www.iup.edu), or
    • Click on the A–Z link from the login page, and use the index to navigate to your website on the staging server.

From the top toolbar, click Switch to Edit. (You can also open a page layout from within the workarea.)

You now have two editing choices: Content or Design.

To edit the page layout (rearrange the content on the page, or add or remove content on the page), click on Design. This opens the PageBuilder menu.

Switch to Edit, then click on Design

(Choosing Content lets you edit the text, images, or collections that are already on the page layout.)

  • Optional Way to Open a Page Layout

From the workarea, go to your department’s set of folders, open the Page Layouts set of folders, and locate the folder that holds the page layout you want to edit. Click once on the page within the Page Layouts folder, and then choose Edit Page Layout. (Choosing Edit will let you edit the title and summary, but not what appears on the page.)

The page layout will now open within the web browser. Here is more information about the PageBuilder menu.

  • What You Now See

There will be at least one column in the page layout. If it’s a new page, the column will be empty.

You will see pale orange boxes around the various items on the page. When you mouse over these, they become black boxes with a description in the top bar of the box.

Decide what you want to appear on the page. If it’s a content block with text describing your program, for example, you will add a content widget to a column. If you want to display a collection, you’ll add a collection widget to the column.

If the page already has content or a collection on it, you can either add new content (which means you’ll add another widget), or you can replace the content with some other content (changing what the existing widget is displaying). The new widget can go into the same column, or you can add another column to the page layout.
