Creating a New Page Layout

  • Page Layouts can be created in two ways: from the staging website, or from the workarea.

Always create a page layout in the folder that makes the most organizational sense. The CMS folder structure drives the website's menu layout, so think of where your site's visitors will expect to find the page.

It’s recommended that you already have the content created before starting on the page layout.

Note: The main folder for your website is only for items related to your home page. Never add a new page within the main Page Layouts folder. If you need a new folder created, please submit an ihelp ticket.

Are you working in a new folder? Because of how the IUP website menu system works, you must inform the Digital Team whenever the first (main) page in any folder is submitted for the very first time. The menu for that folder needs to be manually activated, otherwise your new page(s) will not appear on the website, even if published.

How to Make a New Page Layout

    From the Staging Website

    1. Log in to the staging CMS, then go to the web page you want to edit.
      • Either type the web address (URL) into the browser’s web address field (make sure the beginning of the URL starts with staging.www.iup.edu ), or
      • Click on the A–Z link from the login page, and use the index to navigate to your website on the staging server.
    2. From the top toolbar, click Switch to Edit.
Switch to Edit button in top-of-page toolbar
    3. Click the Design button. The PageBuilder menu will appear. (If the PageBuilder menu is not visible, click the Content button, and then click Design again.)
    4. In the PageBuilder menu, under “Page Action” choose New Page.
      • The Folder Path is shown at the top of the Add New Page window. This defaults to the current page’s folder. However, if you want the new page to be in a different folder, click Change. From the workarea folders, navigate to the folder you want the new page to be in and click on it, then click Next.
    5. In the “Add New Page” window, keep the default layout and click Next.
    6. On this screen, add the new page’s title. Click Next .
    7. The next screen has the metadata and summary tabs. Do nothing on the metadata tab. However, you must add a summary. Always add a summary. (If you don’t, Ektron will do it for you, and it won’t be pretty.)
      • The summary should be a short—one- to two-sentence—summary of what the page is about. Do not simply repeat the title of the page. Summaries appear in search results and in collections.
    8. Click Finish . A confirmation box will ask if you want to be redirected to the page so you can begin editing it. Choose OK. The page will open in a new window.
(Choosing cancel will take you back to the workarea, but will leave the page layout checked out to you—it will not be submitted, and no one else will be able to edit it.)
    9. You’ll now want to Add Content to the Page Layout.
