The following information is intended to familiarize advisors with IUP’s student conduct procedures/processes and the role of advisors within student conduct proceedings.

How do I choose an advisor?

According to IUP’s Code of Student Conduct and Procedures, an accused student and complainant may select an advisor to advise him/her during student conduct proceedings. Only one advisor is permitted per accused student and complainant. An advisor may be present at a hearing to provide support for students. An advisor may be any individual selected by the student, including, but not limited to, a friend, student, IUP administrator, family member, or attorney. S/he may consult and interact privately with the student during the student conduct proceedings. The advisor is not permitted to represent the student. A student conduct proceeding cannot be rescheduled based on the availability of an advisor. If the advisor does not act within the limitations as outlined, the hearing officer will request that s/he comply or remove herself/himself from the hearing.

Who can be an advisor?

An advisor can be any individual selected by student, including, but not limited to, another student, a friend, an IUP faculty, staff member, or administrator, a family member, or an attorney.

What is the role of an advisor?

An advisor's role is to provide support for a student. According to the Code of Student Conduct and Procedures, the advisor may consult and interact privately with the student during student conduct proceedings. However, the advisor is not permitted to have a verbal role in the proceedings.

What happens if an advisor does not act within the outlined limitations?

A hearing officer will request that the advisor comply with the limitations and warn him/her that, if the noncompliance persists, the advisor will be required to remove himself/herself from the hearing.

What are the purposes of the university's student conduct system?

  • To review alleged violations of university policies and/or federal, state, and local ordinances by students

  • To hold students accountable for their actions when IUP policies or statutes have been violated

What are the responsibilities of a hearing officer?

  • To determine the facts of the alleged incident

  • To determine whether the accused student has violated university policy

  • If it is more likely than not that the accused student violated policy, to determine appropriate sanctions for his/her actions
