Environmental Geoscience Student Awards
Early Career Geology Student
Selected by the Geology faculty. It is presented to a junior or senior student who has excelled academically as well as having contributed to the collegiality of the department and supported fellow students.
Outstanding New Geology Student
Selected by the Geology faculty. It is presented to a first- or second-year student who has excelled academically in the geosciences and has contributed to the program.
Geography and Regional Planning Student Awards
The Burchfield Scholarship: for Social Studies Education/Geography majors
- The scholarship is competitive, based on high school academic record for a student whose home residence must be in Indiana or Fayette county. The student must major in Social Studies Education/Geography emphasis at IUP.
- The student must remain in good academic standing to continue to receive the scholarship. Students have received between $1,500 and $3,000 per year over the last several years. Students can receive funding for up to four years.
The Dan and Diane Griffith Scholarship: for Students Pursuing a Combination of Geography and Mathematics

- The scholarship is competitive, based on high school academic record. The student must major in some combination of geography and mathematics (for example a geography major and math minor; a math major and geography minor; or a double major in geography and math).
- The student must remain in good academic standing to continue to receive the scholarship. Students have received $600 per year since the scholarship initiated. Students can receive funding for up to four years.
Alan Mewha Geography Scholarship
- To award a scholarship to one undergraduate student majoring in geography or regional planning at IUP and/or to one graduate student accepted at IUP and following the curriculum in Geography or Regional Planning. Selection is made by the Geography and Regional Planning Scholarship Committee.

A variety of awards to students in the geoscience field.

AAAS Mass Media Sciences and Engineering Fellows Program
A $10,000 stipend plus travel expenses for AAAS fellowship for current undergraduate students or those who have completed a degree no more than one year ago in the physical, biological, geological, health, engineering, computer, social sciences, or mathematics field.
Deadline: ~January 1 annually
ABC Humane Wildlife Control and Prevention Inc. Academic Scholarship
Award of $1,000 to students planning to or currently studying within a field of science, engineering, mathematics, or technology.
Deadline: ~July 1 annually
AEG Scholarships
Several scholarships for undergraduates to attend field camps or professional meetings and support student research, scholarship, and professional development.
Deadlines: ~January 15 annually
AIPG National Undergraduate Scholarship
Awards of $1,000 to $3,000 each for undergraduate students in the field of geology or earth science. Must be at least sophomore level, attend a two-year or four-year accredited college or university within the United States, and either be or have applied for student membership to AIPG.
Deadline: ~February 1 annually
AIPG Pennsylvania Section Student Scholarship
Up to $500 for undergraduate or graduate students accepted or enrolled in a geology or related major. Must be a Pennsylvania resident.
Deadline: ~March 15
ASWP Beulah Frey Environmental Scholarship
Audubon Society of Western Pennsylvania award of $2,500 to graduating high school seniors from Allegheny, Armstrong, Butler, Beaver, Fayette, Washington, or Westmoreland counties applying to environmentally related fields at two-year and four-year colleges.
Deadline: ~April 25 annually
Association of Women Geoscientists Awards
Multiple awards available annually. Awards are available for tuition, field experiences, travel funds for conferences, and others.

Brown and Caldwell Scholarships
Multiple awards available annually for students studying in environmental fields.
Deadline: April annually
The Desk and Derrick Educational Trust Scholarships
Awards in varying amounts to students majoring in geology, chemical and petroleum engineering, or a related field. Must have completed two years of college or be in the second year of college, have a GPA of 3.2 or higher, and be planning for a career in the petroleum, energy, or allied industry, or research and development of alternative fuels.
Deadline: ~April 1 annually
Great Minds in Science Scholarship
Awards ranging from $500 to $10,000 to students enrolled in a STEM program with a minimum 3.0 GPA on a 4.0 scale, and of Hispanic descent.
Deadline: ~May 1 annually
Joseph James Morelli Scholarship
Award of $1,000 to high school and college students with learning challenges who wish to pursue a career in science, technology, engineering, or math.
Deadline: ~March 1 annually
NOAA Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarship
Up to $9,500 scholarship for undergraduates majoring in a discipline area related to oceanic, environmental, biological, and atmospheric sciences, mathematics, engineering, remote sensing technology, physical and social sciences, including geography, physics, hydrology, geomatics, or teacher education.
Deadline: ~January 1 annually
Out to Innovate Scholarships for LGBTQ+STEM Students
Awards of $5,000 to undergraduate and graduate students pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics programs who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, or an active ally of the LGBTQ community. Must have a minimum 3.0 GPA.
Deadline: June annually
PSGC Undergraduate Scholarship
Awards of $4,000 to full-time junior or senior undergraduate students attending an accredited Pennsylvania college or university with outstanding academic records enrolled in science, engineering, or mathematics, and likely to pursue a career in an area of interest to NASA.
Deadline: February 15 annually
The Science Ambassador Scholarship
Full tuition scholarship for up to four years to a female undergraduate student seeking a degree in science, engineering, or math, funded by Cards Against Humanity.
Deadline: Fall deadline annually
Society for Exploration Geophysicists Foundation Scholarships
Awards vary from $500 to $14,000 per academic year for high school students planning to enter college in the fall and current undergraduate and graduate students with above-average grades. Must be in pursuit of a career in applied geophysics or closely related field such as geoscience, physics, geology, or earth and environmental science.
Deadline: March 1 annually
Universities Space Research Association Scholarship Awards
Awards of $4,000 to full-time junior and senior undergraduate students in the field of science or engineering with a career interest in space science research, aeronautics-related sciences, or space science education.
Deadline: August annually
Virginia Heinlein Memorial Scholarship
Awards of $1,250 to a female undergraduate student majoring in engineering, math, or biological or physical sciences.
