Gina RussoMajors: History and Asian Studies

Minor: Art History

Hometown: Lakewood, Colo.

Further Degrees: Currently pursuing a Ph.D. from Stanford University

Most Enhancing Experience: My summer at Middlebury; without it, I wouldn't be where I am today. Also probably my year in Hong Kong.

My Major: People often think humanities majors are useless, but I couldn't be happier with what I chose. Even if I decided to not go to grad school to study history, I know that it made me a better writer, a better thinker, and a better person. I look at the world and I see its cultural and historical trajectories, I understand the strangeness of the past, and I have more nuance in my problem solving and my involvement in current affairs.

HC Impact: The HC affected me in a very direct way because they funded Middlebury; I would not have gotten into grad school without that language training. Moreover, they gave me enormous amounts of personal attention while applying to schools and for scholarships. Most students at upper-level universities do not receive even a small amount of that kind of attention. Also, at the HC, I was able to take real critical thinking classes with tenured professors, unlike most schools, where everything is taught by TAs. I know I am a better writer and thinker because of the attention I received at the HC.
