Accounting Major

Monika Hofmann"IUP, and the Eberly College of Business, provided me with essential tools to be effective in today's business world. I am so grateful that I was able to learn from such wonderful professors, and that I was given so many opportunities through the Eberly College of Business.

"I am originally from Leesport, Pa. I graduated from Holy Name High School (Reading, Pa) in 2005, and continued my educational journey to IUP that fall. Moving away for college allowed me to learn and reach independence. I had reached a decision on my major concentration, Accounting, before my first semester of college started. For me, this was the most crucial decision, as I started Accounting coursework my first semester of college.

"The Eberly College of Business Honors Program was in the initial phase of development the summer before my sophomore year. I applied and was accepted and began coursework in the returning Fall semester. The Eberly Business Honors Program offered me more than just course workit rewarded me with small class sizes, complex projects, and countless opportunities. The professors in the Eberly College of Business provided me with the opportunity to learn and grow as a student, and they prepared me for a successful career path.

"I traveled to Bangalore, India, in October 2008 as part of a Business Honors Program opportunity my last semester of college. Our group participated in the People's Education Society (PES) MANage Competition, which focused on various aspects of the business world, including accounting, finance, advertising, marketing, information technology, human resources, and best manager. Although my major was Accounting, I participated in the advertising portion of the competition, and I placed second overall in the competition of over fifty teams. I was able to use my creativity to be a successful competitor in advertising. MANage enabled me to think creatively and, in turn, I was offered one of the greatest experiences of my life thus far. From arrival to departure, I was welcomed by the warm people of India, and I cherish this experience.

"I graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor's degree in Accounting, as part of the first Eberly College of Business Honors Program graduating class in Fall 2008. I designed the Business Honors Program graduation medallion that is awarded to Business Honors students at graduation. By taking summer courses and 18 credits, I was able to graduate from college one semester early.

"Through the Eberly College of Business Accounting job fair, I interviewed for various government accounting positions, and eventually chose an auditing position with the Department of the Navy in Washington, D.C. This is where I currently work and reside."
