Graduate Editing Service: Writer’s Brief Checklist

  • You must be an IUP graduate student preparing to submit your proposal, thesis, or dissertation to your advisor or committee in order to use this service.

    Before you submit to the graduate editing service, make sure:

    • You have chosen a style guide to follow (APA, MLA, or other style guide as indicated on your Research Topic Approval Form)
    • Your advisor has seen and commented on your manuscript
    • Your manuscript draft is complete
    • Other than final edits, your manuscript is ready to share with your committee
    • Your advisor is aware that you are submitting your manuscript to the graduate editing service

    Edits You can do on Your Own Based on the IUP School of Graduate Studies and Research Thesis and Dissertation Manual:

    • Manuscript format and order of sections (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Title Page
      • Copyright Page (optional)
      • Signature Page
      • Abstract
      • Acknowledgements (optional
      • Table of Contents
      • List of Tables (if required)
      • List of Figures (if required)
      • Body of Manuscript
      • Endnotes (unless incorporated at the end of each chapter) (optional)
      • References
      • Appendices (optional)
    • Font (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Serif fonts (e.g. Times New Roman) for paper distribution
      • Sans serif fonts (e.g. Arial) for electronic distribution
    • Margins (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Should be standard throughout the document
      • Suggested margin is 1" or 1.5" on all sides
    • Pagination (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Each page in the entire manuscript, including the appendices, must be assigned a number
        • For preliminary pages, use lowercase Roman numerals
          • The title page counts as the first page but the number does not appear
        • For the remainder of the manuscript use Arabic numerals beginning with 1 and running consecutively to the end of the manuscript
    • Chapters (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Chapter titles should be in ALL CAPS
      • Each chapter should begin at the top of a new page
    • Title Page (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Should include (centered):
        • Complete title in all caps
        • The statement (centered): "A Dissertation/Thesis Submitted to the School of Graduate Studies and Research in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree [degree being sought]"
          • Do not include department or program name
        • The full name of the candidate (as it appears on URSA)
        • The month and year of graduation (not defense or submission date)
    • Signature Page (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Should include:
        • The full name of the university
        • School of Graduate Studies and Research
        • The name of the candidate's department
        • Candidate's name
        • Degree being sought
        • Sufficient space for each member of the committee and the dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research to date and sign
    • Abstract Page (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Should include:
        • Title
          • Must match title on title page
          • Must be in title case
        • Author
        • Dissertation/Thesis committee members
      • Word limit of 150 for theses and 350 for dissertations
    • Acknowledgements Page (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS should be centered in all caps at the top of the page
    • Table of Contents (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Chapter titles must be listed in ALL CAPS
      • Longer titles should wrap to the next line in order to allow one inch between title and page number
      • Listing section subtitles or subheadings is optional; however, if they are included for one chapter they must be included for all chapters
      • The wording of all headings, subheadings, and chapter numbers (Arabic vs. Roman numerals) must correspond exactly to the wording in the manuscript
      • Use "Chapter" and "Page" column headings
    • List of Tables and List of Figures (see IUP Thesis and Dissertation Manual)
      • Follow same general format as Table of Contents
