Jackie: After transfer to IUP, her college career went swimmingly

Jackie Hynson wasn’t thriving at the Division 1 school that recruited her for swimming. After hearing good things from her friends, she transferred to IUP. Now Jackie’s excelling as a Speech-Language Pathology major – and she just placed third at nationals in the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly!

“IUP was a better fit for me.”

Cook Honors College student Jackie Hynson is happy—but she wasn’t always.

The All-American swimmer from King George, Virginia, began her college career at a Division I school that recruited her for her swimming ability. But it wasn’t a good fit.

“I’d come home and hear from friends how great IUP was, and I knew there was a great speech pathology program,” said Hynson. “And, I heard all these amazing stories about the coach and the swim team. I ended up checking and decided it was a better fit for me.”

Hynson transferred to IUP and is now enrolled in the Speech-Language Pathology program, housed in the Department of Special Education. The program gives her access to practical experience through the Speech and Hearing Clinic, and she balances her major with the Cook Honors College’s core curriculum.

And, her swimming career has progressed, too. Named Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Swimmer of the Year, the seven-time All-American capped her junior year by finishing third at nationals in both the 200 backstroke and 200 butterfly, shattering PSAC records in each.
