This panel discussion will focus on issues that face migrant workers in Indiana County and how they impact its local agricultural and food service industries. These issues have received little public attention and discussion, especially with regard to the local need and void of "unskilled labor" occupations that include hazardous work conditions, unskilled pay rates, and fulfilling long hours of work.
Occupations include those in the poultry industry, the dairy industry, farming, horticulture, and harvesting agricultural produce. The panel will discuss what impact these workers have on the Indiana County economy, including tax payments, social services, and welfare assistance. The panel will also review what social contributions and local problems arise with regard to both documented and undocumented immigrant workers.
Cosponsored by the Working Refugee Group.
