Lowery presents Saddlemire Lecture

John Wesley Lowery, professor and department chair of Student Affairs in Higher Education, delivered the 2024 Saddlemire Lecture at Bowling Green State University on Tuesday, April 2. His talk, "In the Shade of Trees We Didn’t Plant: Establishing Student Legal Rights in American Higher Education," explored the stories of the students and others who fought for student legal rights, unsuccessfully and successfully, who have been hidden or forgotten.

The Saddlemire Lecture is cosponsored by the higher education and student affairs academic programs and the Division of Student Engagement and Success at BGSU. Gerald L. Saddlemire (1920–91) taught at Bowling Green State University from 1969 to 1991 and played multiple leadership roles, including serving as the first chair of the College Student Personnel Department from 1969 to 1985 and leading the doctoral program in higher education from 1990 to 1991.

Lowery is a 2000 graduate of the higher education doctoral program.
