IUP Student Affairs in Higher Education faculty and Department Chair, Dr. John Wesley Lowery, is the recipient of the 2022-23 College of Education and Communications Faculty Research Award, which recognizes outstanding achievement and success in scholastic endeavors.

Dr. Lowery is professor and chair of the Student Affairs in Higher Education department. He is widely regarded as a leading expert in student conduct and legislative issues such as Title IX, FERPA, and Clery. His scholarship relates to some of the most important and substantial issues and challenges found in working with college students and government policy makers. He has contributed 26 invited publications, 25 book chapters and essays, and 17 refereed journal articles to the field, in addition to more than 100 refereed and invited presentations.Three people standing in a row with middle person holding an award

In 2022, Dr. Lowery received the Donald D. Gehring award from the Association for Student Conduct Administration, which recognizes an exceptional professional who has contributed significantly to the development of their campus community, the field, and professional organizations. In 2021, he received the Outstanding Contribution to Literature and/or Research Award from NASPA Region II, and in 2022, he received the George D. Kuh Outstanding Contribution to Research and/or Literature award, the highest honor NASPA gives to a higher education researcher. In 2020, he was recognized by the NASPA Foundation as a Pillar of the Profession for “demonstrated sustained, lifetime professional distinction in the field of student affairs.”

Lowery was presented his award at the College of Education and Communications’ annual Scholarship Reception on Thursday, November 17, 2022.
