Safety Sciences Recognized

Department of Safety Sciences Chairperson Lon Ferguson and Tracey Cekada, assistant professor, received recognition for IUP’s participation in the Alcoa Partnership Grant.

Representing Alcoa is Jeff Shockey, Corporate Health and Safety director, and Jamie Mackay, Environmental Health and Safety Training manager. Shockey is a 1980 IUP Safety Sciences graduate. IUP has received $80,000 from the Alcoa Foundation for the program. The project has two goals: to enhance student learning opportunities to help students succeed in the profession through hands-on exposure to industry through a strategic analysis project and student field trips and to increase the pool of underrepresented students into the Safety Sciences program and profession through scholarships.

In November 2007, IUP received $100,000 from the Alcoa Foundation to support a national forum on fatality prevention in the workplace. The event was hosted by the Safety Sciences Department and was held in Pittsburgh.
