Nate McElroy to Give Fall Sigma Xi Lecture on Water Quality

Nate McElroy of the Chemistry Department will present the Fall Sigma Xi Lecture “Water Quality in Indiana County and the Region” on Tuesday, November 19, from 7:00–8:30 p.m. in Weyandt Hall, room 32.

Indiana County and the rest of western Pennsylvania has provided, and continues to provide, a rich source of traditional fossil fuels for energy generation. In recent years, there has been much concern about the potential negative impacts of gas extraction from the Marcellus shale formation, particularly on water quality. This presentation will include a discussion on our region’s water quality, descriptions of local monitoring programs, and suggestions for future steps to address concerns on both sides of the issue.

You may have read about McElroy’s work on the Beaver Run Water Quality Project, a joint project of faculty and students in Chemistry, Geography and Regional Planning, and Geoscience. For more information, see the Beaver Run Reservoir website.

Student vouchers are available if you want confirmation of your students’ attendance.
