Twelve IUP computer science students participated in the annual CAE-NE Regional Hackathon on September 20–21, 2019, and were able to secure a first-place finish against eight other US colleges and universities.
The IUP Hackathon Team included Douglas Cole, Chase Geis, Josh Griffith, Kaishia Ieraci, David Kornish, Brooklyn Kotula, James Lutz, Franklin May, Victor Sansing, Daniel Saylor, Duncan Taylor, and Tim Valentine.
The CAE-NE Hackathon is an annual event for college students that provides an opportunity to gain valuable experience in competitive cybersecurity events, and increase cybersecurity skills through team work and real-world challenges. Each team is tasked with securing a computer system against attacks, and points are awarded based on speed and security.
Waleed Farag, the director of IUP’s Institute for Cyber Security and the Cyber Security Club advisor, stated, “Our cybersecurity students have done a fantastic job, and winning first place is a testimony of the quality of our students and cybersecurity program.”
Eight schools participated in the event, including Penn State, Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania, Mercy College, Fordham, and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
