Andrea Palmiotto worked with a team of ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board technical assessors to review the forensic science procedures and standards used at the INCC/GN in Algiers, Algeria.

The ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board provides accreditation services that adhere to the requirements of the International Organization for Standardization. These standards exist to assure clients of the quality of an organization’s work. Organizations apply for accreditation, and ANAB assembles multi-disciplinary teams with specialties related to the fields for which accreditation is sought (e.g., firearms, toxicology, entomology, etc.). These teams visit the applicant organizations to review documents, interview personnel, and witness analyses to determine that the laboratories operate to ISO standards.

Palmiotto joined a recent assessment team as the forensic anthropology consultant. The ANAB assessment team spent several days in Algiers at the National Institute of Criminalistics and Criminology of the National Gendarmerie (INCC/GN). The INCC/GN anthropology laboratory is tasked with identification of unknown skeletal remains recovered from medicolegal contexts around the country. Palmiotto toured the anthropology facilities and met with staff anthropologists to observe and review their osteological casework procedures and quality assurance programs.

INCC/GN’s application for accreditation demonstrates their commitment to quality forensic science work on an international scale. Accreditation is not required for forensic laboratories, but working within these parameters strengthens legal cases through thorough documentation of proper evidence handling and analysis. As a technical assessor, Palmiotto brings her years of experience as a forensic anthropologist with the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency, which is the first accredited forensic anthropology laboratory in the world.
