Todd Van Wieren (Department of Disability Access and Advising) co-authored an article with Laura Rhodes (Department. of Safety Sciences), along with Brian McMahon from Virginia Commonwealth University. The article, titled “ADA Title I allegations and the Mining, Quarrying, and Oil/Gas Extraction Industry,” recently appeared in WORK: A Journal of Prevention, Assessment and Rehabilitation.
The study made use of data obtained from the US Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. This research investigated cases of Americans with Disabilities Act Title I employment discrimination allegations made to the EEOC, involving the US mining, quarrying, and oil/gas industries.
The majority of prior research about employment discrimination in the MQOGE industries concentrated on gender and race, while little to no attention had yet focused on disability. Furthermore, the article is only the second EEOC-study of its kind to have focused on a particular activity.
