Dave Berberich, Don Spade, Jenny Faught, and Valerie Baroni, the 2017 DeCoster Award WinnersThe Office of Housing, Residential Living, and Dining was recently recognized as the recipient of the 2017 David A. DeCoster Excellence in Assessment Award. Now in its eighth year, the annual award recognizes an outstanding assessment project completed by one or more members of the Student Affairs Division during the prior academic year.

As part of the OHRLD Assessment Committee, Sondra Dennison, Valerie Baroni, Dave Berberich, Jenny Faught, and Don Spade received the DeCoster Award for developing and piloting the HRL (Housing and Residential Living) Survey and distributing the instrument to all residents on the Indiana and Punxsutawney campuses in spring 2017.

The survey is designed to measure multiple aspects of a student’s residential experience, using outcomes framed around OHRLD’s three broad goals of (a) community, (b) learning and development, and (c) facilities and services. Results from the survey were analyzed by OHRLD’s assessment team, and were used to guide the development of OHRLD’s 2017–18 priorities and strategies for the continuous improvement of its programs and services.

The annual award was presented during the Division of Student Affairs Opening Workshop on Friday, September 15. The workshop, titled “Transformations: Past, Present, and Future,” featured Patti McCarthy, vice president for Enrollment Management, as guest speaker and included remarks by President Michael Driscoll.
