Harlem QuartetOn Tuesday, February 21, 2017, the multi-Grammy Award winning Harlem Quartet will be featured from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. as the second group in the Stapleton Library/Lively Arts noontime series. The group will present a Q&A and mini-preview of their evening performance in the Commons Area next to Java City. The session is open to the public and is free.

In addition to this event, the group will also perform an outreach session at Purchase Line Elementary school on Monday, February 20.

A third event associated with their visit is a pre-concert conversation as part of Black History Month—with Matt Baumer (Music), Erin Conlin (History), and Elizabeth Ricketts (History)—to learn about the history of Harlem and the classical and jazz music styles of Harlem Quartet. This session, also free, will be held from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, February 21, in the new Humanities and Social Sciences Building, Room 126. Everyone will enjoy free pizza and music. The first 25 students to sign in will receive a free ticket to the performance.

Founded in 2006, Harlem Quartet has performed throughout the US as well as France, the UK, Belgium, Panama, Canada, and South Africa, and have collaborated with other distinguished performers, including 1989 Helwig Distinguished Artist Itzhak Perlman, Ida Kavafian, Carter Brey, Fred Sherry, Misha Dichter, Jeremy Denk, and Paquito D’Rivera.

With its original mission working to bring music to inner-city school children, this group has also been featured regularly at jazz festivals around the world, including the Panama Jazz Festival in Panama City, the Montreal Jazz Festival, and the Miami Nice Jazz Festival. They have performed for many dignitaries, including President and Mrs. Obama followed by a tour of South Africa in 2012.

Harlem Quartet’s most recent recording, Hot House, with jazz master Chick Corea and percussionist Gary Burton, was a 2013 multi-Grammy Award winner.
