Pittsburgh Symphony Concert Canceled

Pittsburgh Symphony OrchestraThe Ovations! series concert of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra featuring violinist Pinchas Zukerman for October 8, 2016, has been cancelled. A dinner prior to the concert has also been cancelled.

The decision comes a few days after the members of the PSO went on strike Friday morning, September 30, causing future concerts to be in question. Even after a decision announced Monday morning by the PSO to cancel all of their concerts through at least October 27, discussions between PSO’s Declan McGovern and the Lively Arts’ Hank Knerr continued considering alternative possibilities for the Saturday engagement.

McGovern, vice president for operations and general manager for the PSO, and Knerr, executive director of the Lively Arts, concluded Monday afternoon that there were no viable options at this time. With the uncertainty of when the strike may end and an already full schedule for both the PSO and Zukerman, an immediate alternative was not readily apparent.

As Knerr explained, “As one can imagine, coordinating schedules of dozens of people in high demand along with a variety of other considerations, it is a significant challenge.”

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, “Members of Local 60-471 of the American Federation of Musicians and PSO management were unable to reach a new collective bargaining agreement after months of tense negotiations…. The musicians rejected management’s last, best and final offer Thursday night and established a picket line outside of Heinz Hall on Friday morning.”

The Lively Arts will reach out to its subscribers and ticket holders through e-mail and Facebook over the next few days and will begin to process refunds quickly, with those having purchased their tickets online being handled first. Those patrons do not have to contact the Lively Arts unless they do not see a credit on their account within the next 10–14 days. Those having paid by check should receive a refund within 14–21 days.

Anyone purchasing their tickets at the Hadley Union Building in person may visit the HUB starting Tuesday, October 11, to receive a refund or call the central ticket office at 724-357-1313. Requests for a refund through the Hadley Union Building must be made no later than November 1, 2016.

Anyone having purchased a ticket for the special Helwig Artist Dinner that was scheduled prior to the concert will receive a full refund either as an online credit or check. The tribute dinner will be rescheduled as soon as it is feasible.

Any questions regarding refunds should be directed to the Lively Arts at lively-arts@iup.edu or by calling 724-357-2787 (ARTS).
