The Lively Arts is pleased to announce that Hugo Rummel, a local preschooler, has been cast as Young Coalhouse in the upcoming presentation of Ragtime: The Musical, taking place November 19 in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center as part of the Lively Arts’ Ovations! series.

Hugo will play the role of Young Coalhouse, the sweet and innocent boy of Sarah and Coalhouse Walker, Jr. His walk-on role occurs in the final, uplifting moments of the show. He is the five-year-old son of Jason and Rebekah Rummel of Indiana.

According to Lively Arts Executive Director Hank Knerr, “We are thrilled to have this opportunity for Hugo join in on this national tour. We see this not only as an opportunity to spark an interest in theater for this young gentleman, but in other children as well. The arts bring so much to all of our lives, and this production has it all: history, emotion, turmoil, and a musical score that inspires at every turn.”

Based on the 1975 novel by E. L. Doctorow, Ragtime is a powerful portrait of life in turn-of-the-century America. Set in New York City, the musical intertwines the stories of an upper-class wife, a determined Jewish immigrant, and a young Harlem musician as they confront history’s timeless contradictions of wealth and poverty, freedom and prejudice, hope and despair, and what it means to live in America.

Tickets are available for purchase now, either online or the Lively Arts’ online ticketing site. They can also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or by calling the HUB ticket office at (724) 357-1313.
