Pittsburgh Symphony to Perform Beethoven Masterpieces

Posted on 2/12/2015 2:37:41 PM

The Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra as part of its 2014–15 Ovations! series. Performing an all-Beethoven concert, the PSO will perform Saturday, February 21, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium of IUP’s Performing Arts Center.

This year, helping to celebrate the Lively Arts 25th season, the concert will be under the baton of Maestro Manfred Honeck with the repertoire to include Beethoven’s masterpiece, the Symphony No. 3 in E-Flat major, commonly referred to as the “Eroica” symphony.

Joining the orchestra will be Berlin-based concert pianist Lars Vogt, who will perform the Concerto No. 1 in C major.

Vogt has rapidly established himself as one of the leading pianists of his generation. His versatility as an artist ranges from the core classical repertoire of Mozart, Beethoven, Schumann, and Brahms to the Romantics such as Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, and others.

Honeck has served as director of the PSO since 2008. After two extensions, his contract now runs through the 2019–20 season. To great acclaim, Honeck and his orchestra continue to perform extensively for audiences across the U.S. and the world. They are considered among the world’s leading symphony orchestras.

Tickets for the February 21 concert are available now online, or the Lively Arts’ ticket page. They can also be purchased at the Hadley Union Building ticket office on the IUP campus or by calling the HUB ticket office at (724) 357-1313.

Any seats remaining will be sold at the door starting one hour prior to the performance. Tickets are priced at $26 for regular admission, $22 for seniors and groups, and $14 for students and children.

For more information on this and other events within the Lively Arts, call (724) 357-2787 (ARTS) or e-mail lively-arts@iup.edu.

The Ovations! series is funded, in part, by donations through the Premiere Club, business sponsorships, grants, and the IUP Student Cooperative Association. The Lively Arts, a program of the College of Fine Arts, presents nearly 200 performances, programs, and exhibits annually.
