Curt Porter has coauthored a study on art-based language pedagogy for the September issue of English Teaching: Practice & Critique.
The paper explores applications of visual artist Nancy Chunn’s Front Pages project to language learning pedagogy at the secondary level. It examines ways that language learners in an economically disadvantaged high school could speak-back to mandated reading materials through pictures, graffiti designs, short slogans and other modes of expression. Introducing a wide variety of ways that learners might materially engage with these texts led to complex and politically salient statements about the nature of power in their daily lives.
