Musical Improvisation Genius is Group’s Focus

Next up for to its Ovations! series, the Lively Arts at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will host the country’s premier musical theater improvisational company, Baby Wants Candy. Adding Indiana to its growing list of over 2,000 completely improvised musicals performed around the world, this group of hilarious talent will visit for a single performance on November 19, 2013. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. at the Indiana Area Senior High School.

Since being created in Chicago over 12 years ago, the formula for each show has been to create an entire performance based on a musical title suggestion from the audience. Some of the quirkiest musical themes have been Superhero Hospital, Seeing-EyePonies, Revenge of Thomas Jefferson, and The Department of RedundancyDepartment.

Accompanied by live musicians, the cast turns the first title heard into the theme of a completely improvised 60-minute, one-act musical. Nick Semar, who was on tour with Baby Wants Candy through the United Kingdom, describes this method as “one of the best things about a Baby Wants Candy show—that anything can happen, and you’re consistently surprised whether you’re on stage or in the audience.”

Honored as Ensemble of the Year by the Chicago Improv Festival and Best Visiting Ensemble of the Year by Time Out New York, Baby Wants Candy has maintained a weekly run at the Apollo Theater in Chicago and the Barrow Street Theater in New York City. Past performers on the impressive list of comic and musical artists include Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), Rachel Dratch, Seth Meyers (Saturday Night Live), Stephnie Weir (MADtv), and Peter Gwinn (ColbertReport).

For its Indiana performance, they will begin the evening with a few skits involving some local high school students, including a few from Indiana High School who met members of Baby Wants Candy when both groups appeared during the 2012 Fringe Festival in Edinburgh Scotland. IUP students will also be involved in the opening skits.

The performance is being held at the high school in part because of the relationship the students traveling to the Fringe last year forged with the Baby Wants Candy group in their short time together in Scotland. It further advances the Lively Arts’ work to reach out to the community in a variety of performance settings.
