The Department of Theater and Dance and Theater-by-the-Grove at Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present a benefit titled Broadway Backwards on April 23, 2012, at 8:30 p.m. This student-directed project will benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS. The performance will be presented on the Waller Hall Mainstage of the IUP Performing Arts Center.
Broadway Backwards will highlight an assorted variety show featuring acts from a vast selection of Broadway musicals such as Chicago, Hairspray, Jekyll and Hyde, Chess, The Full Monty, and many more. But this show adds a special twist. Broadway Backwards will turn the tables with men performing the women’s roles and women performing the men’s roles. It will be a crazy, gender-bending night, all for a good cause.
Broadway Cares is a program of Actors’ Equity Association, the professional union for stage actors and based in New York City. They have provided IUP with an assortment of Broadway memorabilia such as signed posters and playbills, various Broadway trinkets, and the ever-coveted Broadway Snow globe (you will have to attend to see for yourself). All of these items will be raffled off in a silent auction at the event with all proceeds going to Broadway Cares and their fund to fight AIDS.
In addition to the auction, there will be two sets of tickets as part of a raffle. The Department of Theater and Dance has donated two season tickets to the 2012-13 Theater-by-the-Grove season and the Lively Arts has donated two reserved seats to the May 4 Ovations! performance by Bernadette Peters.
Tickets for Broadway Backwards, at only $2 each, will be available at the door starting 45 minutes before the performance. Additional donations for Broadway Cares will also be appreciated.
The performance of Broadway Backwards contains language and situations to which some audience members may object.
