On March 30, 2012, approximately 75 faculty and administrators from across divisions participated in a workshop, “Partnering to Create Conditions for Student Success,” and were inspired by the insights of keynote speaker Pat Terenzini.

Terenzini said, “Virtually all student experiences that influence learning and change involve one or more of these characteristics. And they are found virtually everywhere, unbounded by time or place.”

  1. Entail encounters with challenging ideas and people
  2. Require active engagement with those challenges
  3. Occur in a supportive environment
  4. Emphasize meaningful, real-world activities
  5. Involve relational, interpersonal activities
  6. Invite or promote reflection and analysis

Following the keynote address, IUP colleagues worked in small groups addressing the six characteristics of effective learning experiences and identifying ways for IUP to further its efforts to support student success.

Terenzini is a distinguished professor and senior scientist emeritus in the Center for the Study of Higher Education at Pennsylvania State University. He is among the most recognized scholars and most frequently cited authors in the area of higher education research.

The workshop was cosponsored by the Center for Teaching Excellence and the Student Affairs Division.
