Steve Hovan, Department of Geoscience, was invited to present at the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) annual conference in Indianapolis, March 29–April 1, 2012.
Stemming from his work with the Ocean Drilling Program and its educational programs, Hovan will present the keynote address at NSTA’s Earth and Space Science Educators annual luncheon. His presentation, titled “Dust in the Wind—The Geological Record of Ancient Winds,” will summarize the important contributions that deep ocean sediments have made to our understanding of the global climate system. Later, he will participate with colleagues in a hands-on workshop about exploring Earth systems using ocean cores and geospatial technologies. Workshop participants will learn to use geospatial technologies and gigapixel image viewers in a scalable approach to investigate authentic Earth and ocean science data that they can incorporate into their classroom activities.
