The Pennsylvania State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (PSAHPERD) recently honored IUP Professor Joan Van Dyke with the prestigious Dance Teacher of the Year award at the university level for 2010.
In addition, Ashley Tait, a former IUP student, was awarded the Teacher of the Year for dance at the secondary education level.
The PSAHPERD is an education association working to promote quality programs and provide professional development in the disciplines it represents. The PSAHPERD is committed to the continual professional growth and development of its members, the expansion and application of the knowledge base and pedagogical constructs, and the support of the professions that encourage active healthful lifestyle.
As a member for thirteen years, Professor Van Dyke has presented and choreographed at both the state and regional levels, including the Eastern District Association of the American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance.
Eastern District serves the members of its geographical area―Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, Vermont, and the Virgin Islands.
Ms. Van Dyke also received the Professional of the Year award in 2006 and 2009.
Ms. Van Dyke is an associate professor of Dance in the Department of Theater and Dance in the College of Fine Arts at IUP.
