The IUP Freshman Brass Quintet and Legacy Brass Quintet will present recitals on Sunday, December 5, in DiCicco Hall (Rm. 121) in the Cogswell Music Building on the IUP campus. The programs will begin at 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. and are free and open to the general public.
The Freshman Brass Quintet is made up of first-year students from the various brass areas. Students were selected by the brass faculty to participate in this ensemble. Works to be performed include “Two Pieces by Charles Ives” as arranged by Ken Singleton, Jari Villanueva’s arrangement of “Amazing Grace,” and Arthur Frackenpohl’s arrangement of Henry Mancini’s classic “The Pink Panther.”
The Legacy Brass Quintet is the honors student brass quintet for the IUP Department of Music. Membership in the ensemble is by performance audition and is open to any IUP music major in the brass area.
The funding for this ensemble was made possible through a gift from Jim and Jamie Self. Jim Self is an IUP alumnus (BS in Ed. ’65) who has been a first-call tuba player in Los Angeles for over 40 years. He is known for playing the “Voice of the Mother Ship” in the movie Close Encounters of the Third Kind, and has performed for hundreds of movie and television soundtracks in his career, as well as performing as principal tuba in many of the top professional orchestras in and around Los Angeles.
The Legacy Brass Quintet performs advanced quintet repertoire and receives specialized coaching from the IUP brass faculty. For their recital they will be performing Zach Collins’ “Legacy Fanfare,” composed especially for the Legacy Brass Quintet; Jaime Texidor Dalmau’s “Amparito Roca;” and “Festivo” by James Curnow. The ensemble will also perform the world premiere of Anthony O’Toole’s “Brass Quintet No. 3,” commissioned by the Legacy Brass.
