Statement of Relationship of General Fraternities and Sororities

Section VII. Responsibility of the Chapter

Item 10. Deferred Joining - A social Greek organization may recruit new members each semester of the academic year. In order to be eligible to participate in recruitment events, or to receive a bid or invitation to join a social Greek organization, a student must:

  • Be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student.
  • Maintain a minimum 2.25 cumulative grade point average.
  • Have successfully earned a minimum of 12 credit hours at IUP, or transferred to IUP with a minimum of 12 credit hours from another college or university.

Recruitment Guidelines and Expectations

A social Greek organization must be recognized and be in good standing with the university in order to participate in new member recruitment. The organization is required to send a representative (preferably the recruitment chair or president) to a Fall semester meeting hosted by the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement to review university, Panhellenic Association, Interfraternity Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council policies governing membership recruitment.

Each recruitment event must be free of alcohol and conduct that violates any law, ordinance, university policy, rule, regulation, or any part of the IUP Statement of Relationship of General Fraternities and Sororities. Immediately following each recruitment event, the social Greek organization must complete a recruitment verification listing all students who attended the event. This form must be submitted to the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement the business day following the event, and a report of eligibility will be given to the organization within twenty-four hours. The Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement, Panhellenic Association, Interfraternity Council, and National Pan-Hellenic Council reserve the right to attend any and all recruitment functions without prior notification.

IUP expects each organization to comply fully with any international and local chapter guidelines governing recruitment activities. Moreover, the university expects all participants to conduct themselves in such a way as to bring credit to the Greek community as a whole and the university in general.

Student Eligibility

Each student wishing to participate in recruitment events must be verified as eligible by the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement. No bid or invitation to membership may be given to a student who is ineligible or who has not been verified. If an ineligible student is found to have received a bid or invitation to join, the bid will be immediately retracted and the social Greek organization issuing the bid will appear before the university, Panhellenic Association, Interfraternity Council, or National Pan-Hellenic Council Judicial Board.

A student who does not meet the criteria will not be eligible to receive a bid or invitation to join a fraternity or sorority chapter. The student may have routine contact with any member of a social Greek organization, including but not limited to: studying, eating meals together, participating in athletic activities, etc.

Reporting

Anyone wishing to report suspected or alleged violations of this policy may do so by contacting the Center for Multicultural Student Leadership and Engagement at 724/357-2598 or via e-mail at go-greek@iup.edu, or through the Panhellenic Association vice president for Recruitment, Interfraternity Council Judicial Board chairman, or National Pan-Hellenic Council president.
