Scholarships–Creating Opportunities for Applying Mathematics (S-COAM)

  • The Scholarships-Creating Opportunities for Applying Mathematics (S-COAM) project at IUP, while increasing the overall number of students pursuing degrees in mathematics, is unique in its goal of establishing a supportive connection of master’s students with undergraduates through scholarship cohort activities.

    Each year, need-based scholarship funds support five or six new graduate students from the MS in Applied Mathematics program and seven to 10 new sophomore, junior, or senior undergraduate students seeking a major or minor in a mathematical area.

    The application package includes:

    1. Completing an application form with a goal statement online.
    2. Providing names and e-mail addresses of two references. (Your references will receive an e-mail with URL to fill out a recommendation form. At least one of your references should address your mathematics background and potential.)
    3. Submitting your FAFSA for academic year 2016–17.

    If you received an award for the Spring 2017 semester, you must submit the mid-year progress report by May 5, 2017.

    In addition to financial support, S-COAM scholars will also participate in the Mathematics Enrichment Activities Network.

    Activities Include

    • Departmental or college-wide colloquia
    • IUP Math Club, Actuary Club, or Preservice Teachers of Mathematics
    • Local, regional, or national conferences
    • Connections with working professionals in science and engineering fields
    • Workshops in software training, job/internship search, and graduate school preparation
    • Presentations by professionals from industry and academia
    • Social gathering with other S-COAM scholars

    1. Workshop: Introduction to Python -- Part I  (Basic)
      3:30–5:00 p.m., September 13, in Stright 220
      Presenter: John Chrispell 

      Abstract: A basic introduction to python programming language will be conducted in a hands on manner. Topics discussed will include: basic loops, functions, classes, importing libraries from other python scripts, as well as basic IO for files. A quick overview of several code development environments will be discussed.
    2. Workshop: Introduction to Python -- Part II  (More Advanced Topics)
      3:30–5:00 p.m., September 20, in Stright 220
      Presenter: John Chrispell

      Abstract: This workshop will extend some of the topics discussed in the introductory python workshop. Advanced features available in Jupyter notebooks will be discussed and demonstrated. Topics potentially include pulling data from websites, interactive plotting, audio processing, image manipulation and processing, as well as interactive notebook widgets.

    4. Workshop:Introduction to R (Part II)

      Abstract: R is a free statistical software package that is extensively used in both academia and industry.  It is an open source platform that has over 9,800 contributed packages. In this two day workshop, we introduce the major components of R.  This includes importing and exporting data, descriptive statistics, graphics, inferential statistics, and statistical modeling. Participants of the workshop will use R to analyze a variety of data sets.

    Scholarship Renewal Requirements

    • Participate in all required events in the program
    • Submit the FAFSA form, and continue to meet the federal financial aid requirements every semester
    • Continue as a full-time student at IUP making satisfactory progress toward a qualifying sciences and mathematics degree
    • Submit a summary of activities every semester with a short essay on the program and his/her academic progress
    • Complete the program outcomes and assessment survey
    • Undergraduates must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, and graduates must maintain a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale.
