This educational activity addresses several key regulatory, clinical, and communication issues facing physicians and other healthcare practitioners when discussing the medical use of marijuana with their patients. We will discuss issues associated with the use of marijuana, including side effects, dosage and contraindications, substance use recognition, diagnosis, and treatment related to marijuana, plus an overview of regulations and responsibilities affecting certifying physicians and their patients.

  1. Describe the endocannabinoid system and cannabis mechanism of action.
  2. Compare the myths about medical marijuana to the scientific evidence.
  3. Discuss the role and responsibilities of physicians when evaluating a patient with a debilitating medical condition for medical marijuana certification in Pennsylvania.
