This lecture will provide a general overview of co-occurring disorders and discuss the importance of trying to treat the whole person. Mental health and alcohol and drug problems frequently occur in the same individual, often leading to more severe clinical problems. Well-meaning health professionals often only deal with one condition and provide little or no treatment for the other for many reasons, including lack of training, and working in health care systems that often make it difficult to provide combined treatment.
