Magovern Conference Center, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA
This exciting one day conference will focus on engaging and retaining persons who usedrugs and other substances in health care from primary care to the emergency departmentto the inpatient units in our hospitals. Substance users and persons with substance usedisorders are often stigmatized and poorly understood by many health care providers. Thisleads to missed opportunities for not only better management of substance related harmsbut also better management of other chronic diseases and health promotion activities. Thisstigma and misunderstanding often leads to increased health spending and poor outcomesfor substance users that could be avoided. The conference will feature not only new waysof engaging drug users in health care but also new ways for health care providers andsubstance use treatment providers to think about addiction so they are better prepared toprovide high quality health care in a humane and compassionate way.
The current opioid epidemic and the astounding growth in the numbers of person dyingfrom opiate overdose present an urgent and compelling reason to better understand andcare for persons who use drugs and alcohol, regardless of whether it is in the context ofabuse or social and recreational use. This conference is intended for medical providers, primary care physicians, emergency department clinicians, social works, nurses, drugtreatment providers, and EMS/first responders. This is a knowledge-based activity.
