Drug User Health: Promoting Health and Reducing Harm in Medical Settings

Magovern Conference Center, Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh, PA

This exciting one day conference will focus on engaging and retaining persons who use
drugs and other substances in health care from primary care to the emergency department
to the inpatient units in our hospitals. Substance users and persons with substance use
disorders are often stigmatized and poorly understood by many health care providers. This
leads to missed opportunities for not only better management of substance related harms
but also better management of other chronic diseases and health promotion activities. This
stigma and misunderstanding often leads to increased health spending and poor outcomes
for substance users that could be avoided. The conference will feature not only new ways
of engaging drug users in health care but also new ways for health care providers and
substance use treatment providers to think about addiction so they are better prepared to
provide high quality health care in a humane and compassionate way.

The current opioid epidemic and the astounding growth in the numbers of person dying
from opiate overdose present an urgent and compelling reason to better understand and
care for persons who use drugs and alcohol, regardless of whether it is in the context of
abuse or social and recreational use. This conference is intended for medical providers,
primary care physicians, emergency department clinicians, social works, nurses, drug
treatment providers, and EMS/first responders. This is a knowledge-based activity.
