At least five past and present sports greats are scheduled to sign autographs at the Harrisburg Area IUP Alumni Chapter’s sports card show in February, 2006. The sports card show will be at the Harrisburg Mall located off the I-83 and Paxton Street Exit.
Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Dhani Jones and New York Yankees greats Bud Daley and Luis Arroyo will sign autographs at the Harrisburg Mall on Saturday, February 18. Jones will sign autographs from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m., and Daley and Arroyo will sign from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
The next day, Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Dan Kreider will be doing the signing along with Steelers’ running back “Fast Willie” Parker. Kreider will sign autographs from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 19, and Parker will sign from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
IUP Magazine readers can order advance autograph tickets for the show or purchase autographs by mail on eight-by-ten-inch color photos, mini-helmets, baseballs, or similar items.
According to Carl Hisiro ’76, the show’s promoter, the show will give Harrisburg area fans a chance to show which Pennsylvania team has more support in the area.
Kreider, who grew up in Lancaster County and still resides there in the off-season, is a bruising blocking back that makes it possible for Parker and Jerome Bettis to be so successful in the Steelers’ running game. Kreider will sign autographs at the show for $15 each on eight-by-ten inch color photos, cards, or other non-premium items. Autographs on mini-helmets and footballs will be $25 each and on game jerseys and full size helmets for $30 each.
Signed as a free agent out of North Carolina before the 2004 season, Willie Parker, in only his second season, has become the Steelers’ starting halfback in 2005. Perhaps the fastest running back in Steelers’ history, Willie Parker has injected a new and very exciting dimension into the Steelers’ fearsome running game. Parker’s autographs at the show will be $20 each on eight-by-ten inch color photos, cards, or other non-premium items. Autographs on mini-helmets and footballs will be $30 each and on game jerseys and full size helmets will be $40 each.
Dhani Jones, a starting linebacker, is a pivotal player in the Eagles’ defense that helped send them to Super Bowl XXXIX. He also hosts the ESPN2 series, Timeless. Jones’s autographs will be $20 each on photos, cards, or other non-premium items; $30 on mini-helmets and footballs; and $40 on game jerseys and full size helmets.
Luis Arroyo and Bud Daley were the top two relievers on the New York Yankees’ World Series Championship teams in 1961 and 1962 and are two-time American League All Stars.
Arroyo, in fact, led the American League in saves in 1961 with 29, along with 15 victories and an All-Star berth. Arroyo also played for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1956 and 1957. Arroyo’s autographs on photos, cards, and baseballs will be $17 each while Daley’s will be $12 each. On bats and game jerseys, Arroyo’s autographs will be $25 and Daley’s $20.
The Harrisburg Area IUP Alumni Chapter sports card show will feature sixty-five dealer tables selling vintage and new sports cards, sports memorabilia and collectibles, and non-sports cards. Proceeds from the three-day show, scheduled for February 17 through 19, 2006, and from the autograph signings will be donated by the chapter to the Foundation for IUP for the scholarship endowment fund that the chapter created to benefit IUP students from the Harrisburg/York/Lancaster area, and also for the new Regional Development Center being built on campus. The chapter has donated $59,000 from previous card shows to the Foundation, including approximately $36,000 to the scholarship endowment fund. The chapter raised $8,500 from last year’s two shows.
Mail order prices (which include return postage and handling) are $27, $24, $19, $22, and $27 for Jones, Arroyo, Daley, Kreider, and Parker respectively, for an eight-by-ten inch color photo supplied by the chapter. For other mail order items, please call Hisiro at 717-545-1181 to obtain pricing and mailing instructions. Those planning to attend the show to obtain autographs may order tickets in advance by sending a check prior to the show, made payable to Carl Hisiro, to 108 Nicolas Court, Harrisburg, PA, 17110. For advance ticket sales only, include a self-addressed stamped envelope with your order.
Finally, the chapter has a limited number of autographs on color photos for sale, from their previous shows, of former New York Yankees’ greats Graig Nettles, Bobby Richardson, Gil McDougald, Tom Tresh, Joe Pepitone, Bob Turley, Roland Sheldon, Johnny Blanchard, and Ryne Duren; former Pittsburgh Pirates’ greats Vernon Law, Bob Friend, and Kevin Young; current Pittsburgh Steelers’ running back Duce Staley; and former Pittsburgh Steelers’ stars Mike Wagner and John Fuqua.
