Ukulele Orchestra of Great BritainUkulele Orchestra of Great Britain

Date: October 23, 2012

Time: 3:30-4:30 p.m.

Location: Performing Arts Center, Fisher Auditorium, IUP Main Campus

In what will be a truly unique experience, you're invited to join the premier ukulele ensemble in the world, the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, in a “ukulele jam session.” Bring your uke and have a great time as they take you through their version of Beethoven's “Ode to Joy."

Whether young or old, amateur or professional, or just a weekend aficionado, you're welcome to join the band in this workshop on the ukulele as you learn a most interesting version of this popular classic. Afterwards, stay and join us for an English Tea and the opportunity to “talk Ukes” with this amazing group of musicians.

The culmination of this fun workshop? Come to the concert with your ukulele and, when “Ode to Joy" is performed by the group, all of you get to join in! Be sure to check the UOGB YouTube Page for a video of them playing with hundreds of ukulele players in the Royal Albert Hall.

So you can be as prepared as possible, the music for “Ode to Joy” is available below as PDF files for download. Simply click on the appropriate key and the one you'd like to play—melody, countermelody, and with or without notation. To practice along with their players, simply go to UOGB YouTube Page, click on “Videos” at the top of the page, and scroll down to the appropriate practice video that starts with “Ode to Joy...” There is also a video to help with tuning your ukulele. And here's a video that indicates how the music might sound for the various parts: Relentless in C Rehearsal Piece.

This outreach is in advance of the Ovations! series concert being presented on October 23, 2012, at 8:00 p.m. in Fisher Auditorium, and is brought to you through ArtsPath, the arts-in-education program of the Lively Arts. For directions to Indiana and the campus, and for information on parking, please visit IUP Map, Directions, and Parking.

If you are interested in attending, and in order to have enough refreshments at the English Tea, please RSVP the Lively Arts associate director for arts-in-education, Jeff Wacker, at jwacker@iup.edu or call the Lively Arts office at 724-357-2787 (ARTS).
