John Blake Jr. Quartet

John Blake Jr. Open Rehearsal

Date/Time: Sunday, February 3, 2013 / 3:30 p.m.
Location: Gorell Recital Hall, second floor of Sutton Hall, IUP Main Campus

Join jazz legend John Blake Jr. and IUP's own Stanley Chepaitis for the unique opportunity to hear them rehearse Vivaldi's Violin Concerto, as arranged for two jazz violins and string orchestra by Dr. Chepaitis. Both individuals bring decades of experience and, in an open rehearsal format, will demonstrate the process of preparing a brand-new work for its world premiere performance later in February when Blake returns to Indiana.

Jazz Jam Session

Date/Time: Monday, February 4, 2013 / 7:00 p.m.
Location: DiCicco Rehearsal Room (Rm. 121), Cogswell Hall, IUP Main Campus

This is a tremendous hands-on opportunity for high school and college-age students to learn from one of the best in an open jam session. IUP and Indiana community members who play jazz or just enjoy it are also welcome to attend. The rhythm section for the jam is comprised of three of the most talented jazz players at IUP; Andrew Millikin, piano; Nick Adams, bass; and Shane Velsor, drums. Bring your ax and be prepared for a great evening!

Educational Outreach to area Schools

Date/Times/Locations

  • February 4, 2013 / 10:00 a.m. / United High School
  • February 4, 2013 / 2:00 p.m. / Blairsville Elementary School
  • February 5, 2013 / 9:00 a.m. / Indiana Area Middle School
  • February 5, 2013 / 1:00 p.m. / Saltsburg Elementary School

Continuing with a strong commitment to educational outreach by touring artists, the Lively Arts is proud to have partnered with Rebecca Slak and the Indiana Arts Council as she worked with these area schools to have John Blake Jr. visit each to present a lecture/demonstrations on the violin, jazz, and, more specifically, music by African-American composers of the Civil War era—a perfect tie-in to school curriculums during Black History Month.

All of these activities are in advance of the Ovations! concert being presented on February 21, 2013, as the John Blake Jr. Quartet returns to Indiana for an 8:00 p.m. concert in Gorell Recital Hall, second floor of Sutton Hall. The quartet is brought to the community through ArtsPath, the arts-in-education program of the Lively Arts.
