Rachel Horrell, a senior undergraduate student in the Health and Physical Education Teacher Education program, was recognized as the 2021 recipient of the Violet Baumgardner Scholarship Award.

This award is given by the Society of Health and Physical Educators of Pennsylvania, an organization for health and physical education professionals. This award recognizes student achievements in academics, professional service and potential, contributions to the department/college/university, contributions to the community, and/or community service.

Horrell was selected over students from across the state enrolled in other universities. She is very active in her major, the university, and her local community. She is also IUP’s student liaison for a state-wide future professionals committee. Horrell will personally receive her award at this year’s state SHAPE PA Convention this November.

IUP’s Health and Physical Education Teacher Education students and alumni have a strong history of winning state-level professional awards. For this particular award, an IUP student has been the recipient in three out of the past four years. This demonstrates IUP’s commitment to the health and physical education discipline and to student professional preparation.
