The hand-in folder can be used by students to submit assignments electronically. In order to protect a student’s privacy, only the instructor has full access to this folder. Students have "Write" access only to the hand-in folder. Write access allows files to be submitted, but does not allow anyone else to access these files. Once submitted, a file cannot be changed or deleted even by the owner of the file. Students cannot open this folder nor see its contents. In order for a student to save a file to the hand-in folder, the drag and drop or copy and paste commands are used. The following steps explain how to submit a file to the hand-in folder:

Important: Please create a unique name for a file that you would like to submit. If all students try to save a file named First-Assignment, only the first student will be successful. Students should include their username as part of the file name to make it unique, for example, First-Assignment-Username. This not only gives files unique names but also identifies the owner.

  1. Right-click on the file that you would like to submit to the hand-in folder.
  2. Click "Copy" from the context menu that pops-up.
  3. Locate the hand-in folder in the course directory where you would like to submit your file.
  4. Right-click on the hand-in folder.
  5. Click "Paste" from the context menu that pops-up.
  6. Your file has now been submitted to the hand-in folder.
  7. To verify that your file has been successfully submitted, try pasting it again. If you see a message similar to the one below, you have successfully submitted the file.

Please Note

  • Students cannot save files directly from any computer application (such as Word) to the hand-in folder.
  • Students cannot delete a file once it is in the hand-in folder; only instructors can delete submitted assignments.
  • Multiple files can be compressed with a file compression program (e.g. Zip Central, WinZip) so they can be added to the hand-in folder as one file.
  • If you are running Mac OS X v10.5 (Leopard), you must use ftp access when attempting to place files in the hand-in folder.
