Protect your Computer Against Viruses, Spyware and Adware

  • Make sure you have good and up-to-date spyware and adware protection.

Spyware and adware come in a multitude of varieties. Primarily, spyware is software that captures information stored on your computer, without your permission or knowledge, and relays that information to others without your consent. It can also work in conjunction with adware to produce unwanted pop-up ads and take you to unwanted sites. These malicious programs can dramatically slow down the performance of your computer, as well as change your security settings so that your computer is vulnerable to attack.

It is critical that you have spyware protection software installed on your computer to protect your computer against these threats. There are many options to choose from. Some are free, and some you have to purchase. If you are an IUP student or employee, you do not have to purchase this software, because IUP provides Malwarebytes spyware and adware protection software to all IUP students and employees for free!

  • Does my computer have Antivirus protection built in?

As stated above, some computers have operating systems that come with antivirus protection built in. See below for more information regarding which operating systems have built-in antivirus protection.

If your computer does not come with some kind of antivirus software, or if your antivirus software license is about to expire, IUP offers Sophos Anti-Virus to all IUP students and employees for free!
